Here at Waxing With Aggy, we want to make sure you have a full understanding of what to expect so that our clients feel comfortable and confident at their next waxing appointment. Being informed sets a standard for success and ensures the best possible waxing experience!

The correct hair length for waxing

Whether you’re working on a Brazilian Wax, or coming in for a standard leg waxing, the length of your hair is crucial for success. At minimum, the hair length must be at least a quarter inch – around the size of a grain of rice – in order for the wax to successfully latch on to the hair follicle. If the hair is not the minimum length, there is room for the hair root to remain in the skin and cause faster hair growth.

Does the area being waxed affect required hair length?

The simple answer? No!

Some clients may be hesitant to let their bikini area grow out as it’s their preference to maintain short hair or no hair around their bikini line – but whether it’s your back, legs, bikini line, or a landing strip, we recommend at least growing it out for a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks to ensure proper length for a successful wax, depending on your hair’s personal rate of growth.

Why is hair length so important?

Hair length, along with exfoliating and removing dead skin cells, is a critical component for your success when it comes to waxing. If you have short hair, the hard wax may not be able to bind itself with the hair follicle and, therefore, will not be able to remove the root of the hair from the desired area. The removal of the hair root is what provides that soft, smooth look after your wax for weeks to come.

Is it possible for your hair to be too long?

Yes! Depending on your hair growth cycle and whether or not you have thin or coarse hair, having too long of a follicle can cause issues during your waxing appointment. If the hair is too long, it can cause breakage on the follicle instead of removing the hair at the root. When breakage happens it can cause the waxing process to be uneven and even increases the possibility for ingrown hair. It’s also a common myth that having longer hair creates a more painful waxing experience, but this is totally untrue.

The good news is that our professionals here at Waxing With Aggy are more than happy to work with you – regardless of your hair length – to give you the best waxing experience we can provide. Just don’t trim or shave in between waxing appointments! Let your esthetician trim back your hair if they find it necessary.

What to do to prepare for your waxes

First and foremost: shower. Having clean skin, as well as removing excess sweat and oil will start your waxing session off right. In addition to removing oils and dirt, exfoliating is a must. When you exfoliate you remove dead skin cells and provide a smoother, more even canvas for your wax to take place. This allows the wax to bind effectively with your hair.

Can you shave in between waxing appointments?

Shaving between waxing appointments is a no-go! We understand it can be uncomfortable for some to have hair grow out in certain areas, but it is very important to you and your skin to avoid doing so if you’d like a successful wax.  Since the hair is not being removed at the root, shaving can cause hair to grow unevenly as hair can go through its own hair growth cycles.

When should you book your second wax?

Again, everyone’s hair growth cycle is different. Since hair waxing removes the hair at its root, and therefore causes hair growth to be slowed, we suggest waiting a minimum of four weeks before booking your next appointment. Regardless of how much time transpires, as long as your hair reaches the minimum recommended length for waxing, we will be more than happy to provide you with our services.

Other waxing preparation guidelines

Outside of the basics, it’s important to learn more about yourself when preparing for your waxing appointment. Get to know your skin type and whether or not you have sensitive skin. Being familiar with your pain tolerance and whether or not you want to take some aspirin or use some numbing cream is completely acceptable –  if not encouraged. Be aware of potential issues with other medications such as Accutane, Retin-A, or Renova. If you are on any of these medications, please reach out to one of our estheticians for advice prior to booking.
